PUTTING further pressure on the Government of Cyprus to resolve the “Title Deeds-cum-fraud mess”, Cypriot MEP Marios Matsakis has written to the Interior Minister demanding that the Cyprus Government takes urgent action to resolve the situation.
Marios Matsakis is a well known personality in Cyprus. He is a politician and a Member of the European Parliament for the Democratic Party; he sits with the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe group. Although a medical doctor by profession, he became involved in politics in the mid 1990’s and has sparked controversy on a number of occasions.
Below is a copy of his letter to the Interior Minister.
Honourable Mr Neoclis Silikiotis
Interior Minister
Republic of Cyprus
Dear Mr Silikiotis,
Ref: Retention of Title Deeds by property developers in Cyprus
You are well aware of this very long-lasting anomaly, which has surely reached the proportions of a scandal; and for which many people, both Cypriot nationals and foreigners, are totally unjustly losing or risk lolsing their homes.
The matter is quite unacceptable by any standards of Justice or fair play and it must come to a speedy and satisfactory conclusion soon. I know that, successive governments have done very little to correct the situation, but now that we are in the EU, I as a Cypriot MEP demand that, the Cyprus government takes effective remedial action urgently.
Please let me know as soon as possible that this will be done and please do not resort, as I am sure you will not, to telling me any of the many naive excuses that have been put forward by your predecessors in the past.
With respect,
Dr. Marios Matsakis, MEP
Those at the receiving end of the Title Deeds scandal will welcome Dr Matsakis adding his weight behind those putting pressure on the Cyprus government to act.
